From November 15 to 18, the 2nd China Marine Equipment Expo (CMEE 2024) was grandly held at the Fuzhou Strait International Convention and Exhibition Center. As the pioneer and practitioner of Yuchai Group's zero-carbon power technology route in the new energy field, YUCHAI CYNLAND HYENTECH showcased a variety of self-developed innovative fuel cell stacks and systems at the marine equipment exhibition, and its clean power attracted great attention.
Developing the hydrogen energy industry is an important way to improve China's energy structure, achieve "carbon peak" and "carbon neutrality", and promote the low-carbon transformation in all fields of the transportation system. As an important part of the transportation system, the carbon emission issues and carbon reduction plans of the shipping system have attracted high attention from both domestic and international communities.
China has the largest domestic shipping fleet in the world. As of 2023, the number of domestic navigation vessels reached 117,000. However, the number of new energy vessels is very limited. According to the Water Transport Science Research Institute of the Ministry of Transport, as of June this year, the number of new energy vessels built and under construction in China is only slightly over 1,000.
Hydrogen fuel cell vessels have operational characteristics such as being clean, efficient, and quiet. Hydrogen fuel cell systems generate electricity through the chemical reaction of hydrogen and oxygen, providing reliable power for vessels. Fuel cells not only have a much higher energy conversion efficiency than traditional power sources, but also their emission products are only water, truly achieving zero emissions. This is the trend for the future development of green and low-carbon shipping.
Dr. Wang Yu, the R&D director of YUCHAI CYNLAND HYENTECH, introduced: "The heart of hydrogen fuel cell vessels is the fuel cell system. In recent years, Yuchai has carried out comprehensive research and development focusing on core technical indicators such as the reliability, durability, and environmental adaptability of fuel cell systems. At present, we have completed the product layout of fuel cell systems ranging from 60kW to 240kW. We can carry out modular design and development according to customer requirements to ensure the safety and reliability of the power system. It can be used as the main power system for all-electric driven vessels in coastal and inland river areas, or as an auxiliary power supply system for large ocean-going vessels."
Hydrogen energy shipping provides a trillion-level industrial track and is also an important field for Yuchai's hydrogen energy technology innovation practice. Dr. Lu Biao, General Manager of YUCHAI CYNLAND HYENTECH, said: "YUCHAI CYNLAND HYENTECH is an innovationist who attaches great importance to product quality. We are firmly driven by technological innovation and rely on the group's strong R&D, manufacturing, service, brand and marketing capabilities to build our own hydrogen energy industry's technological innovation ability and product competitiveness. Moreover, by integrating resources from upstream and downstream of the industrial chain, we jointly compose a hydrogen energy ecosystem and promote the low-carbon and zero-carbon development in fields such as road traffic and shipping."
